UM’s Office for Civic
Engagement will hold the annual Fall Volunteer Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 6-7, in the UC Atrium.

Students and community members
can learn about numerous volunteer opportunities available around Missoula from
representatives of more than 20 nonprofit organizations at the fair. The event
is free and open to the public.

The Office for Civic Engagement is a department
of the Davidson Honors College. It serves as the University’s primary agent of
community activism and civic responsibility.

2) Write a one page reaction paper as outlined here. (Turn in during class).

3) Start thinking about your Family Tree project.

I know it says on the syllabus to post your 6-word memoirs on the blog before Thursday, but don’t.

Instead, bring them to class on that notecard that Mary handed out in class and make sure they are also recorded in a notebook somewhere.

Write about 300 words (typed, double spaced) about the image you chose to bring to class last week.  What compels you about the images you chose? What story did the image evoke; what meanings did you see in it?

Bring to class on Tuesday

Go to Google Images to find photos of memorial sites that are not Maya Lin sites. You might search for American Indian memorials, or WWII memorials in Japan, or any other memorials that interest you.

Print yourself a copy of the image and bring it to class on Tuesday (we will look at Google images too, but your copy will help us find the exact image you selected).

Examine your double-columned journal entry on “Rainy Mountain,” and, incorporating any relevant ideas you garnered in the class discussion based on everyone’s journal entries, choose a topic you would like to emphasize for your paper. It should be a topic that inspires a strong thesis statement from you: “Sacred lands have been desecrated by advancing land development in the West.” “Place means something different in American Indian culture than it does in outside White culture.” “Grandparents are our first and best teachers.”

Make sure that you have supporting statements from the Momaday text to support your opinion. You’re not reporting on what Momaday said, nor are you just stating your opinion and letting it stand alone. You are stating an opinion and then supporting what you believe with Momaday’s words.

Reflective Journal

Choose one significant line or comment made by either one of the presenters at the performance that really “hit” you in a significant way. Think about why that comment stuck with you, and describe why, as best you can. What are the conclusions you can draw from your recognition of that comment’s importance? Is the significance more to you, personally, or do you think you recognized its significance in a universal way, as applying to “all humankind?”

Secondly, talk about whether the comment was made in the middle of a humorous riff on something, or was it a serious “aside.” What role do you think humor plays in talking about tough topics? Do you think it was appropriate for the speaker to take the stance (serious or humorous) that he did with the particular comment that struck you?
